BEAUTY 1x1 - HOW TO STORE YOUR COSMETICS CORRECTLY
Even as a teenager, I spent hours in the beauty department stocking up on samples, jars and perfumes - and I still haven't stopped! My bathroom cabinet is bursting at the seams and my lipstick collection is definitely museum-worthy. Good storage is key to keeping these treasures for as long as possible. So, for anyone who is like me, today I'm going to tell you how to store your cosmetics properly!
Confessions of a Beauty Enthusiast
I confess: I am a beauty freak! I believe that cosmetic treasures are a bit like food: how you store them determines their effectiveness and longevity. That's why every tube and jar in the bathroom needs to be stored properly. After all, it's our little wellness temple for a few minutes a day that we want to enjoy to the fullest. So, how do you store them properly? Let me show you: come into the bathroom with me!
Nourishing Cosmetics
Cosmetic products love to be dry, dark, and cool. So, don't put them on the windowsill, the edge of the bathtub, or the radiator, my dears. Fluctuating temperatures and UV radiation can damage the sensitive ingredients. Products with a high water content, such as moisturizers and body lotions, are particularly susceptible to germs and bacteria. The beauty rule of thumb: your skincare range is best kept in a closed bathroom cabinet.
PROPER HANDLING IS KEY
Proper Cosmetic Storage and Handling Tips
It's not absolutely necessary to think of unusual storage locations for your cosmetics (though my daughters would be very creative β and already have their noses in my jars all the time anyway). Correct handling is just as important:
ππΌ Use Clean Fingers: Always use products with clean fingers to avoid transferring germs. Even better, gently remove textures in jars with a cosmetic spatula or a fresh Q-tip!
ππΌ Open Only When Needed: Only open products if you can use them quickly. I know it's tempting to try out a lot, but it's best to be mindful.
ππΌ Close Properly: Always close jars, tubes, and bottles carefully to maintain their effectiveness.
ππΌ Check Shelf Life: Pay attention to the shelf life indicated by the small PAO (Period After Opening) jar symbol on the back of your products. If it smells different or has changed color, it's time to part with it.
DECORATIVE COSMETICS
Make-up is also more sensitive to moisture, heat and UV radiation than you might think. Lipstick, mascara and foundation: creamy textures are best stored dry and at room temperature. Opaque plastic or metal boxes or pretty cosmetic bags are great.
The Myth of the Fridge: Debunked
Let me debunk this myth for you: Not all beauty products benefit from being stored in the fridge. Lipsticks can lose their color, powders can crumble, and nail polish can change consistency in constant cold. Excessive and consistent cold can even harm the emulsions in skincare products, causing the fat and water components to separate. Unless explicitly stated on the packaging, it's sufficient to store your products dry and cool at room temperature. Sweet & simple!
What Works Well:
Eyeliner and Kajal: Placing them in the fridge for about 20 minutes before use hardens the texture, making the line more precise.
Dry Products:
Blush, Compact Powder, and Eyeshadow: These need dry storage. The enemy here is hot steam (think surface mold)! Tip: Using a brush to apply these products reduces the transfer of germs.
Makeup Tools: Brushes
Storage: Brushes are best kept in drawers to protect them from high humidity and dust in the bathroom. If you don't want to hide your impressive brush collection, find a dry spot. How about a vanity table in the bedroom? My absolute dream!
Cleaning: Always store brushes lying flat after washing to prevent moisture from seeping into the handle. Lip brushes, which come into contact with your lips, should be washed regularly and disinfected!

Makeup Tools: Sponges and Brushes
Sponges also like to be kept dry, but they should get some air to dry after use. My tip for you: Simply place them on a glass bowl in the bathroom cabinet!
Cleaning:
Sponges: Wash them after each use.
Hair and Face Brushes: Clean them regularly under warm running water with a mild shampoo.
Beauty Spring Cleaning
I hope I could give you some useful tips today β or reassure you that you're already doing everything right! It's worth regularly sorting through your cosmetics collection, disposing of expired products, and lovingly giving away unused items. This way, your beauty palace stays up-to-date! And the best part about decluttering: there's room for new products afterward! π€
Tell me in the comments, my dears: How often do you "sort out" your beauty collection?
